So How Did Me Made May Go?

I think it went fantastically.

There were ups and downs and it made me a lot more conscious of what I was wearing/putting on my body and what I constantly reached for in my wardrobe.

I knew my gaps before I started, and I still agree with those, but I think I found a few more. My first gaps that I need to fill are: more comfy tshirts (preferably some darker colored ones, as all my me mades are light and almost all my rtw are dark), LEGGINGS (because I live in them, though that might change now with the finding of a new pattern this week…). The other gaps I found were: layering pieces, I really need some cardigans, cropped and regular length, and some sweaters to layer over my dresses, as well as more cool weather appropriate dresses. All of my dresses are for mid summer weather, they’re lightweight and either short sleeved or sleeveless.

I know if I were to do this challenge again in the winter, I’d have almost nothing to wear. So I do think that will be my next focus, once I get a few more warm weather items busted out (I’m looking at you shorts and tank tops and summer dresses!)

I also know that I need to find patterns that work with what’s in my fabric stash, I have a lot of wovens in my stash and hardly any knits. So I really need to figure out how to stash bust these wovens and actually wear them.

Most Worn From Me Made May 2017:

Me Made Bras and Undies, of course. But as far as actual clothes go here are the top 4:

  1. My Seafoam Rayon vneck Plantain tee, which I wore a total of 5 times this month
  2. My Periwinkle Short Sleeved Hemlock Tee in a purple sweater knit, I wore this a total of 3 times
  3. My Marled Blue Sweater Using the Plantain tee pattern, I wore this one 3 times as well.
  4. My Maroon Wren Dress, I wore this 2 times, and would have worn it more if the weather was a tad warmer.

So you can see the trend here of what I prefer to wear from day to day: tshirts

Right now I’m focusing on things I’d want to wear and take with me on vacation in a couple weeks. My boyfriend and I will be in California for 1 1/2 weeks. I know I’ll be packing my plantain tee, hemlock, and maroon wren dress, as mentioned above in my top 4. I’ll be taking the new shorts I just finished and I’m hoping to whip up a bunch more me made undies to take with me. I’ve been thinking about making myself another bra as well, so I might try to get that finished before the trip too.

Will You continue to wear me made items as often as you did during the challenge?

While I definitely think I’ll be wearing me made items a lot more than I was before me made may, I don’t think I’ll be wearing me mades every day. I am hoping to keep up with maybe 2 or 3 items a week.

What new goals do you have for your me made wardrobe now that this challenge is over?

I really want to swap out my entire underwear drawer with me made undies. I don’t think this is going to be too difficult due to undies being very quick to sew up. I also need to get rid of a lot of my rtw undies as they’re pretty old and ratty at this point. So my goal is to make a new pair for every pair I throw out (or, more realistically, throw out a pair for every pair I make haha).

Another goal I have is to be more conscious of what I wear from day to day and to not just go back to over sized men’s tshirts and leggings every day. I want to wear things that make me feel better about my body and not just hide my body. I’m hoping this will get easier as I make more items for myself, but right now I do have to make a conscious effort to not grab those comfy tees and leggings every morning.

Did Me Made May affect you in a way you weren’t expecting?

Yes. While making me more conscious of what I was wearing, it also made me more conscious of my body as well. I have gotten into the habit of hiding my body under my clothes, and that just wasn’t something I could do during this challenge. So it was hard for me to deal with but at the moment, I am feeling a bit better about my body, but it’s still very hard.

It also put into perspective how unrealistic my style goals were. While they weren’t crazy out there, I did find myself preferring comfort over style and my goal “Aesthetic” was more style and still comfortable, but not as much as what I like to wear. So will I be wearing jeans and button down shirts or nice blouses on a daily basis? Not any time in the near future! But I have learned to think more creatively about finding a middle ground. I have the Sew Over It City Break Capsule Ebook and have made a pair of shorts from the Mia Jeans Pattern and definitely plan to make a pair of full pants from them, so those I think are the perfect compromise between cute (but uncomfortable) jeans and my go to leggings. They’re stylish, but still extremely comfortable and actually flattering. As far as nice blouses go, I think I just need to go towards something looser and more casual, so I do want to make the Alex Shirt Pattern from that same Sew Over It Ebook, which is a very oversized button down shirt. I feel like styles like that and maybe the archer shirt and popover variation could be some good go to patterns for me, as they have a relaxed fit and should be comfortable, but also look a little more stylish than a baggy men’s tshirt. 😉

This also ended up being my most productive month creatively so far this year. I filled up the list space on my planner with all the finished items from this month. It was a very busy month for my etsy shop, and for myself as well, so it was shocking that I got so much finished with everything going on. My sewing machine was broken for almost the first 2 weeks of the month, then I was on a road trip and had to prep and pack for that, so that took up 4 days (one day to pack, 3 days for the trip), and the general social activity in my regular life, so half the time during the weekends we were out away from the house and so I wasn’t making anything then either. So it’s amazing how much I got done! I’m very proud of myself.

Overall, if you are interested in doing a challenge like this but aren’t sure if you can do it, I say just go for it. You won’t know until you try, and if you don’t meet your goal by the end, then you’ll have learned what you need to do for next time!

#mmmay17 the final stretch!

I didn’t get a photo of my outfit yesterday, but I did wear me made items. I wore my periwinkle purple short sleeve hemlock tee with a me made bra and some rtw undies and rtw galaxy leggings. My boyfriend and I went down to his sister and her husbands house for a very chill game and grill day. I haven’t been feeling all that well since saturday, I think I’m catching something as I’ve been overly warm, so I must be running a fever. So I just sat around and knit and chatted a bit.

Today I wore a me made bra, my marled sweater knit plantain tee. and some rtw leggings and undies.

18766093_10154640650918441_2589354720527013406_n

I finished my Tennessee souvenir socks. So now all of my Souvenir yarn (from that trip at least) has been used! It didn’t even have the change to be added to my stash. I’m very happy about that as I’m trying to use as much of my stash as possible this year. So the fact that I bought 2 skeins and they immediately were used is very satisfying.

18765748_10154640650913441_3261479836245920199_n
Tennessee socks and a peek at my galaxy leggings and a bit of my hemlock tee

I also managed to finish my Sew Over City Break Mia Jeans in charcoal ponte as shorts. I love them! They ended up a tad shorter than I wanted, but they’re still wearable for me. I made a size 10 and graded down to a size 8 in the waist and for the waistband. They fit pretty darn well. I cut out a second pair with the remaining fabric but I cut a straight size 8 so I can compare the fit. Once I figure out which size I like better I plan to make a full length skinny jean in some black ponte I have in my stash.

For these shorts, I still need to iron the waistband and the leg cuffs, as well as do some top stitching to the seams. But they’re basically finished and wearable at this point. The fit on these is pretty spot on to the measurements stated in the pattern. They are higher waisted on me because I am short, only 5’0″ so they sit higher than stated. Next time I think I’ll take the waist in a tad so it sits closer to my actual waist, as it’s a tad loose.

I definitely think these will be packed in my suitcase for my trip to California in a few weeks! I’ll probably be packing my hemlock tee, seafoam plantain tee, as well as my wren dresses and maybe my comic book sweetheart halter neck dress, along with some other rtw things.

I’ve started another pair of socks, I’m using the left over knit picks felici in the slumber party colorway and making myself a pair of shortie socks with contrasting heels, toes, and cuffs. I’m using Loops and Threads brand Woolike yarn in the Ice Blue colorway.

What me made items do you pack for vacations? Do you have any pattern recommendations for comfy travel wear?

#mmmay17 last full week recap!

Lots of repeats this week, but that just shows me the things I’ve made and love and obviously need to make more of!

SO here’s the recap:

Monday: Maroon/Mulberry Wren Dress in ITY knit from fabric.com

Tuesday: Cropped plantain tee with cap sleeves and vneck in a rayon knit from fabric.com

Wednesday: Short sleeved Hemlock tee in a periwinkle lightweight sweater knit that I got for free from a Church destash and a me made bra

Thursday: Moneta Crop top out of the same periwinkle sweater knit

Friday: Me made undies

Saturday: me made bra

Sunday: Seafoam plantain tee with vneck in a rayon knit from fabric.com

So a pretty successful week. I’ve finished a lot of sewing, finished knitting a shawl, and started a new shawl and am nearly finished with a pair of socks I’ve been knitting.

I’ve started my Sew Over It Mia Jeans shorts in a charcoal ponte roma knit. I just need to hem them and make a button hole and stitch the button on. They’re just as I wanted them to be and are definitely a much better fitting version of the rtw ones that I loved. I’ll post more in depth about the pattern and the shorts once they’re finished.

How are you all feeling about me made may?

#mmmay17 #22

Confession time: I didn’t get dressed until maybe 4:30pm today.

18620299_10154618182013441_7985550976232684966_n

I definitely enjoyed the freedom of not having to get dressed in anything other than a baggy tshirt today. So I took full advantage of that for most of the day before finally throwing on this dress. This is my mulberry/maroon Colette Wren Dress that I’ve worn already for me made may. It’s almost as comfy as just wearing a baggy tshirt, but not quite.

I finished 2 items for an order and packaged that up to ship it out. I also started work on another order and that one is about half done now. I did a little more knitting on my shawl. I had the cat who was being a big lazy butt today.

She woke me up from getting in the basement window (our bedroom is in the basement and she has to jump from our bed to the dresser to the window, and of course she wanted the window by my head). Then as soon as I was up and about, she decided to cry at me constantly and then when I didn’t pet her enough (I’m not cruel, I did pet her for a good while), she decided to jump into the middle of the bed and lay there near our pillows.

She’s not allowed on our bed, except to get in the window, we’ve had to put an old sweatshirt at the bottom corner of the bed because we couldn’t keep her off it, but today she didn’t want to stay in that spot. So I literally had to roll her onto the sweatshirt because she wouldn’t get up when I nudged her to move, so I just started rolling her. It was hilarious, but now our bed has quite a bit of cat hair on it… again… My allergies do not approve.

My anxiety was a bit better the first half of the day, but as usual, it escalated as the day went on. I also encountered something I didn’t really anticipate this week, due to being distracted with the current issues I was experiencing last week. I had a lot of urges today to relapse, having the house to myself for most of the day. I have a really major issue with “opportunity” relapses, where I can get away with it and not have anyone around to notice it. It happens every time and no matter how much I prepare and try to prevent it, I always fail.

So I had a lapse today. But that also shows just how degraded of a mental state I was in that I couldn’t even hold out 1 day of being by myself before I caved and lapsed. I’m not sure what this means for the rest of the week. I have plenty to do, but that doesn’t mean much for that part of my brain that wants to relapse. I’ve been having trouble the last few months with thoughts of relapse and very bad body image, but this was the first time I 100% gave into it. So I’m not really sure what to do now or where to go from here. But it’s not promising considering all the things that will be happening over the next month and a half, and how anxious I will be because of that. So, there’s that.

Anyway, what have you all been up to? Have you been doing anything different with the impending end of me made may? Have any more plans for progressing your me made wardrobe either now or once me made may is over?

MMMay17 Week 3 recap

This week was a little bit of a fail for me made may. Mainly because of my mental state. I did wear me made undies or bra everyday though. So that’s something I guess.

Today I grabbed for my woven hemlock tee, but I’m not a fan of the fit on me. It’s just a bit too tent like on me and I should have just finished the armhole seams with a zigzag stitch instead of doing a french seam, as the seam is a bit too bulky and sits oddly. So I took it off and swapped for my seafoam vneck plantain tee. I’m also wearing a me made bra today.

18557520_10154615571028441_8400994106274353019_n

Now for the recap:

Monday: only me made undies

Tuesday: Me made undies and bra with a periwinkle purple linden sweatshirt and rtw leggings.

Wednesday: Black and white polka dot sweetheart halter neck dress.

Thursday: me made bra. I attempted to wear a me made shirt (burda styles wrap front blouse in magenta chiffon), but wore it for a couple minutes tops and then switched to a rtw baggy tshirt and leggings.

Friday: Me made undies. rtw leggings and tshirt

Saturday: me made bra and undies and my marled blue sweater long sleeve plantain tee with rtw leggings

Sunday: me made bra, seafoam vneck plantain tee with rtw leggings and undies.

Overall, not terrible, especially given the circumstances. Hopefully this next week will be better. I’m thinking I’ll be wearing more dresses next week, but don’t take my word on it.

Things I’ve finished in the past week:

I finished 2 slave leia bras, 3 pairs of undies, and a nude mesh bra I’ll be finishing tonight (I just need to sew the clasps on and then sew the underwire in) So it was a pretty productive week for the shop.

I also finished my linden sweatshirt, moneta crop top, and woven hemlock sweatshirt. I also finished knitting the body of a sweater I’ve been working on (so not exactly a finished object, but it was a big deal and a big part of the project that’s not finished)

I have 2 more bras and a pair of undies to finish for the shop this week, and I have a new thong design I’d like to finish and add to the shop this week as well.

Sewing plans:

Cutting out another linden sweatshirt, cutting out some shorty peg leg leggings (testing some adjustments to the pattern), taping together the Mia Jeans pdf from the sew over it city break capsule ebook (and washing some fabric for it), work on knitting my souvenir socks and shawl that I started.

All in all I’ll be keeping myself busy over the next week. What are your sewing and knitting plans for the next week?

#mmmay17 Day 20 in which I left the house *gasp*

Yes, you read that correctly, I actually left the house today. And I only changed outfits once before I finally went out. I was going to wear another sweetheart halter dress I had made, but it was surprisingly cool out today, so I went with rtw leggings, me made undies, me made bra, and my marled blue sweater knit plantain tee.

18670872_10154612365883441_2628703393654468076_n

I was exhausted from after going out to joann’s, there were a lot of people there. I picked up the things I needed and a few other things I wanted, a total of 3 yards of fabric, so not much. 2 things for orders and 2 things for myself. I was supposed to head over to the tattoo parlor after Joann’s but I was wiped out and I could tell the boyfriend was as well, he was up at 5:30AM to catch a train to New York to fix things for work, so he didn’t get much sleep and was tired from the travel and dealing with the frustration of fixing things at work. So I decided to skip the tattoo place (I was just going to make the appointment, because my anxiety is weird and I had to do it in person because phone calls are the devil or something). We just got back and I’m drinking my tea and the boyfriend is already passed out on the couch, so I think I made a good call.

18620451_10154612442043441_8046399884711212684_n

I’ll be spending today cutting and prepping things for orders and maybe some knitting and hopefully get some reading time in. I should probably do a little meal prep as well. I picked up some ponte roma fabric in charcoal and navy blue. I’m planning to print out the Mia Jeans pattern from the City Break Capsule Wardrobe by Sew Over It. I bought this e-pattern book pretty much as soon as it launched. I loved all the patterns in it, though I probably will never make the skirt just because that style doesn’t fit my body type at all. But other than that I love it. They are stretchy skinny jeans that are a mid rise. So I wanted to take that pattern and test the fit and sizing out in a pair or two of shorts. Once I get the sizing right I’ll most likely make a full length pant too. I’m excited for it and hopefully the pattern doesn’t need too much adjusting for me. I’m assuming I’ll be grading up the hips and maybe a full seat adjustment. But I’m just going to do the grading up, as that’s pretty standard for me with all patterns, and if I need some extra booty room I’ll do the FSA for the second pair.

We might go over to the tattoo place tomorrow afternoon, but I guess it all depends on how we feel. I’m still not feeling myself, but I’m hoping this next week will be a nice recharge for me.

Day 19, mostly an update and some finished things

I don’t have any outfit pictures for you today either. I am wearing me made undies, but that’s the only me made I’m wearing. I went to my oversized tshirt and leggings that is my standard go to for bad physical and/or mental health days.

My mental health is still on the fringe. I had to stay home from an event (that I just learned about the other night because no one told me about it and I wouldn’t have known until this morning if I hadn’t talked to my boyfriend’s sister). But I’m glad I didn’t go because I would not have been able to hold it together around a bunch of people, even if I wasn’t interacting with any of them.

I ended up finishing a lot of sewing work the past couple days and I am very proud of that. I finished a bra and 3 different pairs of underwear and I finished the moneta crop top I had started last week (though I don’t have pictures of that yet)

18519476_10154610421033441_5507041270790660267_n

The cat has been anxious since coming back from out trip as well. She has been a huge cuddle bug and very needy for attention, which is adorable, but not so much when you are very allergic to cats. Yesterday night she climbed onto our bed and I was willing to let her stay on the bottom corner of the bed, as long as she stayed on the cloth that I laid down for her (so she doesn’t get too much cat hair on the bed), but that wasn’t good enough for her last night. She kept crawling up the side of the bed and rubbing her face on my shoulder and we’d shoo her back to her corner. Eventually she just jumped on top of my boyfriend and refused to move, he tried picking her up and moving her but she kept coming back, so we finally let her stay for a while until she eventually moved to the end of the bed where she stayed the rest of the night. She never sleeps with us and has only tried once or twice before when the boyfriend’s parents were away for a week, but that was quite a while ago.

She’s been hanging around me a lot, and I don’t know if she can sense that I’m not doing well, or if she just knows she can count on me being here most of the time because I hardly leave the house. Either way, I don’t mind her company and her need for attention, it makes me smile and laugh at her ridiculousness.

18486430_10154610420873441_8519232896968312472_n

So I’ve been doing a lot of tea drinking, chocolate eating, and sewing and some knitting. Plans for this weekend have changed as well, the boyfriend has to go into New York tomorrow for some work things, which was very unexpected. But, in a way, I’m kind of glad, it means I will have some more time to myself to try to relax. I still have to go out tomorrow, but that all depends on when he gets back from working. I need to stop by the local fabric store for some orders I have for the shop. I was also going to stop by the tattoo parlor and set up an appointment for my next tattoo that I wanted to get done soon, but we might push that back for another day. We were also going to drive around the area that we’re looking to buy a house over the next year or so. But we definitely won’t have time for that tomorrow, so that will have to be pushed back to next week.

The boyfriend’s parents will be leaving for about a week as of Sunday. His dad has a business trip which his mom will be joining him on the trip so they can stay after the meetings/conference is over and have their own little vacation. So hopefully the lack of people to interact with over the next week will help my mental health heal a little bit. As I really can’t take much, if any social interaction right now.

Knowing that I was expected to go out today and having both parents home all day really made it difficult for me this morning. I woke up at 9am thanks to a nightmare and didn’t leave the bed until after 12. It’s been very hard to push myself to get moving, I just feel so sluggish lately. I’ve been going on the stationary bike we have to get my “steps” in on my fitbit (because if I start falling behind on my steps, it’ll be very hard to build back up and it’ll make my pain worse) So I’ve been knitting while going slow and steady on the bike. Knitting as exercise, every knitters dream right? I just put my fitbit on my ankle and go while I sit back, peddle and knit for 15-30 minutes. It’s a great way to fit in both knitting and exercise at least.

But hopefully I have more to show you this weekend, as I should be wearing me made tomorrow and maybe sunday since I need to actually get dressed to leave the house.

I hope everyone’s week has been going well.

Day 17 & 18 of mmmay17: a ball of anxiety

So I forgot to post yesterday, even though I did wear me made. Or rather, I was so busy shaking with anxiety and pacing that I didn’t have time to post. Oh well, what can a girl do?

18527988_10154606373803441_7549988309727365876_n

Another sweetheart halter neck dress. This was the first one I made, it was a sort of wearable muslin. It has some issues, but I still love it and definitely need to pick up more polka dot fabric. The waist was a little too bit for the skirt, so there are some puckers and bunching there (That were fixed in later versions). I had to take in the sides, and on later versions I raised the bust line a bit as the apex on this one sits a bit low on me (not surprising, I am petite after all). I also had to gather the center front a little as it was gaping and not sitting against my chest at all, the gathers helped a lot. The skirt on this one is longer than the other 2 I’ve made, which I like, it gives it a very classy vintage feel for me.

18486440_10154606373838441_1595951450589880498_n

Overall I love this dress and everyone else seems to as well, people can’t seem to take their eyes off it/me when I’m wearing it. This is obviously a tried and true pattern for me, I’ll most likely be wearing my other version of it over the weekend, given that the weather stays nice and warm.

18519723_10154604389878441_6806510565065578917_n

For today, I put on an outfit, and pretty much immediately switched out to a baggy tshirt, so I kind of failed on the me made outfit today. I tried, but I’m just too exhausted and my anxiety is too high for me to be in anything but super comfy baggy clothes. The shirt is a burda styles pattern.

18620060_10154607283788441_3117025355826077826_n

I’m not sure what’s going on with my mental health, other than it’s not good right now. I think the road trip did a lot more damage than I anticipated and now I’m dealing with the consequences and after effect of it all. I am trying and I am getting orders worked on and done and shipped out, but it’s very difficult. I’ve been in a lot of pain because all my muscles are extra tense from the anxiety and I’ve been tensing my jaw and grinding my teeth CONSTANTLY, I have to consciously unclench and stop grinding my teeth every. five. minutes. So there’s that.

I’ve also been working on my knitting to help keep my calm. I finished the body of the sweater I’ve been working on since around February. It’s a top down raglan, so I need to pick up the stitches from the waste yarn on the sleeves and knit those now, and then it’s finished! I haven’t tried it on at all yet, so I have no idea if it will fit yet. I know it’ll be more fitted than I originally anticipated and wanted, but I don’t think it’ll be too bad, it should still be comfy and wearable. I’m using Loops and Threads brand Woolike yarn in the Mauve colorway. It’s an acrylic nylon blend from Micheal’s and it’s a burgundy-berry color. I didn’t want to invest a lot of money in a sweater since I didn’t know if I’d like knitting sweaters or if I’d even finish it, so I didn’t want to waste the money on it if it didn’t work out. I definitely think I’ll be upgrading to something a bit more pricey (probably only cascade or something inexpensive like that). I’m using the Pretty Mallory pattern by Vera Sanon (It’s a free Cascade pattern)

And I caked up some of the Tennessee Souvenir yarn and cast on a pair of socks for that.

That’s all for today. Hopefully I’ll have some interesting things to show you this weekend!

Day 16 of Mmmay17

After much lounging around in PJ’s this morning, I finally got dressed and threw on my new linden sweatshirt. I paired it with some rtw leggings (that really need to be replaced, they were once black and are now more of a charcoal grey at best) and I wore me made undies and bra.

18485451_10154601901848441_1243448620826586176_n

For the linden sweatshirt, I cut a size 0 and graded the hips up to a size 4. The fit is really great, just loose enough for me to be comfortable in it, but I’m not drowning in it either. I was a little worried that the underarms would end up sitting too close to my armpits for my liking, but I think they’re just perfect. (I apparently have very sensitive armpits and can’t have anything rubbing against them. haha)

18485569_10154601901838441_4190643974297143203_n

Next time I’ll add about 2 inches to the length of the body so that it actually covers my booty. Right now it’s about 2 inches short of being able to cover my booty, and about 1/2 – 1 inch from being long enough to cover in front. And since I live in leggings, I’d like to be covered. But other than that, I love it!

18486234_10154602150918441_3055728836206495300_n

Today I’ve been working on orders that need to get out this week. I have 8 items that need to be finished and ship within the next couple days. I finished a different order (pictured below) and one of the 8 items today and started on some of the others.

18447454_10154601901858441_3328023663820347891_n

I also seem to have a case of Cast-on-itis coming on. I want to cast on all the shawls and socks and sweaters. But I have a very limited number of knitting needles, so I can’t cast on all the things. Plus I don’t need any other distractions right now from my orders. I’m still working on my burgundy sweater and I have a pair of patons kroy socks on the needles (though I think I might frog them because I MIGHT be allergic to it.. not far fetched as I am allergic to wool, but it’s just so scratchy and it makes me itchy so I never want to work on them). I do have a pair of sock needles free right now, but like I said, I don’t need distractions right now. Ah well.

What have you all been working on? Are any of you on a stressful deadline for something right now too?
