Even though my depression has been hitting me very hard lately, I’ve managed to make progress with my sewing and knitting.
My boyfriend and I leave for California tomorrow. We will be there until the 25th, so I’m not sure what my posting schedule will be like while I’m there. But in the mean time I’ve been working on more projects.
I finished 2 pairs of leggings, using the Patterns 4 Pirates Peg Legs pattern with the contoured waistband. I had to take some length out of the leg and the waistband because they were clearly made for a much taller person than I (being only 5’0″ that isn’t that surprising).
The first pair is a black mystery knit that I found at a church destash for free. It’s nice and thick and has a similar feel to athletic leggings and has quite a bit of stretch in both directions. My second pair is a grey and black chevron print fabric I purchased not long ago from Denverfabrics.com, it’s a double knit 58% Polyester 30% Rayon 10% Nylon 2% Lycra blend. They feel very nice and thick, they have a good amount of stretch, though I almost feel like I should/could have sized up for this pair as there’s a bit of a wiggle dance to get them on over my hips.
They feel nice on, but definitely feel closer to athletic/compression leggings due to the thickness and how fitted they are. I lined the front waistband with the same fabric and this might have been a mistake as it has made it thicker and less stretchy. I knew it would lessen the stretch some, but I guess I didn’t realize by how much.
So for my next pair, which I’ll be using a black athletic “performance” fabric from Joann’s. I think I’ll size up for those and take a bit more length off the leg around the knee area (As it’s a tad loose there) and a tad more off the height of the waistband since they still sit high on my waist.
I’ve spent the day packing and folding laundry. My boyfriend has decided he was going to get his hair cut and dyed blue and save packing all for tomorrow morning before we have to go to the airport for our flight. We have an evening flight, but still, that’s cutting it pretty close. My clothes are packed, I’m taking my favorite 2 handmade tshirts: my seafoam plantain and my purple hemlock; and my maroon wren dress, my charcoal high waist shorts from the Mia Jeans pattern, and some handmade undies and bras. Everything else is rtw.
I’m packing a pair of socks to knit on and my current shawl WIP, the Zostera shawl in Loops & threads woolike ice blue and denim blue. I plan to visit a local yarn shop while in California, so I may start something new while I’m there, or on the flight home.
What do you usually pack for vacations? Do you have a me made vacation capsule? If you did, what would you include in your vacation capsule wardrobe?
I think it went fantastically.
There were ups and downs and it made me a lot more conscious of what I was wearing/putting on my body and what I constantly reached for in my wardrobe.
I knew my gaps before I started, and I still agree with those, but I think I found a few more. My first gaps that I need to fill are: more comfy tshirts (preferably some darker colored ones, as all my me mades are light and almost all my rtw are dark), LEGGINGS (because I live in them, though that might change now with the finding of a new pattern this week…). The other gaps I found were: layering pieces, I really need some cardigans, cropped and regular length, and some sweaters to layer over my dresses, as well as more cool weather appropriate dresses. All of my dresses are for mid summer weather, they’re lightweight and either short sleeved or sleeveless.
I know if I were to do this challenge again in the winter, I’d have almost nothing to wear. So I do think that will be my next focus, once I get a few more warm weather items busted out (I’m looking at you shorts and tank tops and summer dresses!)
I also know that I need to find patterns that work with what’s in my fabric stash, I have a lot of wovens in my stash and hardly any knits. So I really need to figure out how to stash bust these wovens and actually wear them.
Most Worn From Me Made May 2017:
Me Made Bras and Undies, of course. But as far as actual clothes go here are the top 4:
- My Seafoam Rayon vneck Plantain tee, which I wore a total of 5 times this month
- My Periwinkle Short Sleeved Hemlock Tee in a purple sweater knit, I wore this a total of 3 times
- My Marled Blue Sweater Using the Plantain tee pattern, I wore this one 3 times as well.
- My Maroon Wren Dress, I wore this 2 times, and would have worn it more if the weather was a tad warmer.
So you can see the trend here of what I prefer to wear from day to day: tshirts
Right now I’m focusing on things I’d want to wear and take with me on vacation in a couple weeks. My boyfriend and I will be in California for 1 1/2 weeks. I know I’ll be packing my plantain tee, hemlock, and maroon wren dress, as mentioned above in my top 4. I’ll be taking the new shorts I just finished and I’m hoping to whip up a bunch more me made undies to take with me. I’ve been thinking about making myself another bra as well, so I might try to get that finished before the trip too.
Will You continue to wear me made items as often as you did during the challenge?
While I definitely think I’ll be wearing me made items a lot more than I was before me made may, I don’t think I’ll be wearing me mades every day. I am hoping to keep up with maybe 2 or 3 items a week.
What new goals do you have for your me made wardrobe now that this challenge is over?
I really want to swap out my entire underwear drawer with me made undies. I don’t think this is going to be too difficult due to undies being very quick to sew up. I also need to get rid of a lot of my rtw undies as they’re pretty old and ratty at this point. So my goal is to make a new pair for every pair I throw out (or, more realistically, throw out a pair for every pair I make haha).
Another goal I have is to be more conscious of what I wear from day to day and to not just go back to over sized men’s tshirts and leggings every day. I want to wear things that make me feel better about my body and not just hide my body. I’m hoping this will get easier as I make more items for myself, but right now I do have to make a conscious effort to not grab those comfy tees and leggings every morning.
Did Me Made May affect you in a way you weren’t expecting?
Yes. While making me more conscious of what I was wearing, it also made me more conscious of my body as well. I have gotten into the habit of hiding my body under my clothes, and that just wasn’t something I could do during this challenge. So it was hard for me to deal with but at the moment, I am feeling a bit better about my body, but it’s still very hard.
It also put into perspective how unrealistic my style goals were. While they weren’t crazy out there, I did find myself preferring comfort over style and my goal “Aesthetic” was more style and still comfortable, but not as much as what I like to wear. So will I be wearing jeans and button down shirts or nice blouses on a daily basis? Not any time in the near future! But I have learned to think more creatively about finding a middle ground. I have the Sew Over It City Break Capsule Ebook and have made a pair of shorts from the Mia Jeans Pattern and definitely plan to make a pair of full pants from them, so those I think are the perfect compromise between cute (but uncomfortable) jeans and my go to leggings. They’re stylish, but still extremely comfortable and actually flattering. As far as nice blouses go, I think I just need to go towards something looser and more casual, so I do want to make the Alex Shirt Pattern from that same Sew Over It Ebook, which is a very oversized button down shirt. I feel like styles like that and maybe the archer shirt and popover variation could be some good go to patterns for me, as they have a relaxed fit and should be comfortable, but also look a little more stylish than a baggy men’s tshirt. 😉
This also ended up being my most productive month creatively so far this year. I filled up the list space on my planner with all the finished items from this month. It was a very busy month for my etsy shop, and for myself as well, so it was shocking that I got so much finished with everything going on. My sewing machine was broken for almost the first 2 weeks of the month, then I was on a road trip and had to prep and pack for that, so that took up 4 days (one day to pack, 3 days for the trip), and the general social activity in my regular life, so half the time during the weekends we were out away from the house and so I wasn’t making anything then either. So it’s amazing how much I got done! I’m very proud of myself.
Overall, if you are interested in doing a challenge like this but aren’t sure if you can do it, I say just go for it. You won’t know until you try, and if you don’t meet your goal by the end, then you’ll have learned what you need to do for next time!
I didn’t get a photo of my outfit yesterday, but I did wear me made items. I wore my periwinkle purple short sleeve hemlock tee with a me made bra and some rtw undies and rtw galaxy leggings. My boyfriend and I went down to his sister and her husbands house for a very chill game and grill day. I haven’t been feeling all that well since saturday, I think I’m catching something as I’ve been overly warm, so I must be running a fever. So I just sat around and knit and chatted a bit.
Today I wore a me made bra, my marled sweater knit plantain tee. and some rtw leggings and undies.
I finished my Tennessee souvenir socks. So now all of my Souvenir yarn (from that trip at least) has been used! It didn’t even have the change to be added to my stash. I’m very happy about that as I’m trying to use as much of my stash as possible this year. So the fact that I bought 2 skeins and they immediately were used is very satisfying.
I also managed to finish my Sew Over City Break Mia Jeans in charcoal ponte as shorts. I love them! They ended up a tad shorter than I wanted, but they’re still wearable for me. I made a size 10 and graded down to a size 8 in the waist and for the waistband. They fit pretty darn well. I cut out a second pair with the remaining fabric but I cut a straight size 8 so I can compare the fit. Once I figure out which size I like better I plan to make a full length skinny jean in some black ponte I have in my stash.
For these shorts, I still need to iron the waistband and the leg cuffs, as well as do some top stitching to the seams. But they’re basically finished and wearable at this point. The fit on these is pretty spot on to the measurements stated in the pattern. They are higher waisted on me because I am short, only 5’0″ so they sit higher than stated. Next time I think I’ll take the waist in a tad so it sits closer to my actual waist, as it’s a tad loose.
I definitely think these will be packed in my suitcase for my trip to California in a few weeks! I’ll probably be packing my hemlock tee, seafoam plantain tee, as well as my wren dresses and maybe my comic book sweetheart halter neck dress, along with some other rtw things.
I’ve started another pair of socks, I’m using the left over knit picks felici in the slumber party colorway and making myself a pair of shortie socks with contrasting heels, toes, and cuffs. I’m using Loops and Threads brand Woolike yarn in the Ice Blue colorway.
What me made items do you pack for vacations? Do you have any pattern recommendations for comfy travel wear?
Lots of repeats this week, but that just shows me the things I’ve made and love and obviously need to make more of!
SO here’s the recap:
Monday: Maroon/Mulberry Wren Dress in ITY knit from fabric.com
Tuesday: Cropped plantain tee with cap sleeves and vneck in a rayon knit from fabric.com
Wednesday: Short sleeved Hemlock tee in a periwinkle lightweight sweater knit that I got for free from a Church destash and a me made bra
Thursday: Moneta Crop top out of the same periwinkle sweater knit
Friday: Me made undies
Saturday: me made bra
Sunday: Seafoam plantain tee with vneck in a rayon knit from fabric.com
So a pretty successful week. I’ve finished a lot of sewing, finished knitting a shawl, and started a new shawl and am nearly finished with a pair of socks I’ve been knitting.
I’ve started my Sew Over It Mia Jeans shorts in a charcoal ponte roma knit. I just need to hem them and make a button hole and stitch the button on. They’re just as I wanted them to be and are definitely a much better fitting version of the rtw ones that I loved. I’ll post more in depth about the pattern and the shorts once they’re finished.
How are you all feeling about me made may?
Today’s outfit is a repeat that never got a full body picture because I wore it while traveling. So yay, you get to see what it really looks like. My short sleeved Hemlock tee in a lightweight periwinkle purple sweater knit, with a me made bra, and rtw panties and leggings.
I love this shirt, it’s super comfy but still can look nice if you find the right fabrics. I’d love to make a few more just like these, an oatmeal/tan color, a deep blue, a charcoal grey, stripes would be pretty too.
I followed the pattern as is, but for the sleeves I just cut bands the size of the armholes, folded them over and stitched them into the armhole. So it’s just like applying the neck band, just a wider piece of fabric.
I finished the last of my orders today and packaged it up to ship out in the morning. I also finished a new item for the shop, but haven’t taken pictures yet, I wanted to wait until I had better, natural, lighting. So look forward to seeing that tomorrow or at some point this weekend.
My boyfriend and I are enjoying the peace of having the house to ourselves. He’s been streaming on youtube every night and has expressed how much nicer it is not to have to close the door or worry about the sounds his parents make in the evenings (they are practically deaf and blast the tv while watching videos on their phones at full volume and then try to talk over all that noise to each other…) the main thing he has to worry about is the cat jumping up on his lap or table while streaming, but that’s not a huge deal. The loudest I get is my sewing machine at full speed, and I’m in the basement while he’s upstairs, so unless I bang pots and pans in the kitchen, none of it registers on his mic.
We (mainly him, due to me being unable to work) are saving for a house of our own, but we are still about a year away from being able to move out. So it’ll be interesting to see how things go when his parents are back this weekend.
Aside from that I’ve been keeping busy and getting quite a bit of work done on my shawl, I’m loving it so far and I hope I love it all the way through. I’d really like to find a shape of shawl that I like knitting. I’ve found that, while I like wearing triangle/bandanna shawls I absolutely have knitting them. I’ve made 2 and the second one is currently balled up in the bottom of a bin in the closet because I was so frustrated with it that I couldn’t stand looking at it for a while. I’m at about 100 stitches on the needle right now and I’m just under 1/2 way done, and the 100 stitches don’t feel nearly as long while knitting it as I thought they would, so that’s great.
I’m happy all my orders are finished because now I can focus on knitting more and sewing what I want. Hopefully I’ll get my mia jeans started next week.
Have you had many repeat items or whole outfits in your me made may so far?
This week was a little bit of a fail for me made may. Mainly because of my mental state. I did wear me made undies or bra everyday though. So that’s something I guess.
Today I grabbed for my woven hemlock tee, but I’m not a fan of the fit on me. It’s just a bit too tent like on me and I should have just finished the armhole seams with a zigzag stitch instead of doing a french seam, as the seam is a bit too bulky and sits oddly. So I took it off and swapped for my seafoam vneck plantain tee. I’m also wearing a me made bra today.
Now for the recap:
Monday: only me made undies
Thursday: me made bra. I attempted to wear a me made shirt (burda styles wrap front blouse in magenta chiffon), but wore it for a couple minutes tops and then switched to a rtw baggy tshirt and leggings.
Friday: Me made undies. rtw leggings and tshirt
Sunday: me made bra, seafoam vneck plantain tee with rtw leggings and undies.
Overall, not terrible, especially given the circumstances. Hopefully this next week will be better. I’m thinking I’ll be wearing more dresses next week, but don’t take my word on it.
Things I’ve finished in the past week:
I finished 2 slave leia bras, 3 pairs of undies, and a nude mesh bra I’ll be finishing tonight (I just need to sew the clasps on and then sew the underwire in) So it was a pretty productive week for the shop.
I also finished my linden sweatshirt, moneta crop top, and woven hemlock sweatshirt. I also finished knitting the body of a sweater I’ve been working on (so not exactly a finished object, but it was a big deal and a big part of the project that’s not finished)
I have 2 more bras and a pair of undies to finish for the shop this week, and I have a new thong design I’d like to finish and add to the shop this week as well.
Cutting out another linden sweatshirt, cutting out some shorty peg leg leggings (testing some adjustments to the pattern), taping together the Mia Jeans pdf from the sew over it city break capsule ebook (and washing some fabric for it), work on knitting my souvenir socks and shawl that I started.
All in all I’ll be keeping myself busy over the next week. What are your sewing and knitting plans for the next week?
After much lounging around in PJ’s this morning, I finally got dressed and threw on my new linden sweatshirt. I paired it with some rtw leggings (that really need to be replaced, they were once black and are now more of a charcoal grey at best) and I wore me made undies and bra.
For the linden sweatshirt, I cut a size 0 and graded the hips up to a size 4. The fit is really great, just loose enough for me to be comfortable in it, but I’m not drowning in it either. I was a little worried that the underarms would end up sitting too close to my armpits for my liking, but I think they’re just perfect. (I apparently have very sensitive armpits and can’t have anything rubbing against them. haha)
Next time I’ll add about 2 inches to the length of the body so that it actually covers my booty. Right now it’s about 2 inches short of being able to cover my booty, and about 1/2 – 1 inch from being long enough to cover in front. And since I live in leggings, I’d like to be covered. But other than that, I love it!
Today I’ve been working on orders that need to get out this week. I have 8 items that need to be finished and ship within the next couple days. I finished a different order (pictured below) and one of the 8 items today and started on some of the others.
I also seem to have a case of Cast-on-itis coming on. I want to cast on all the shawls and socks and sweaters. But I have a very limited number of knitting needles, so I can’t cast on all the things. Plus I don’t need any other distractions right now from my orders. I’m still working on my burgundy sweater and I have a pair of patons kroy socks on the needles (though I think I might frog them because I MIGHT be allergic to it.. not far fetched as I am allergic to wool, but it’s just so scratchy and it makes me itchy so I never want to work on them). I do have a pair of sock needles free right now, but like I said, I don’t need distractions right now. Ah well.
What have you all been working on? Are any of you on a stressful deadline for something right now too?
